I was talking to a lady from Winchester who was telling me that the ‘side extension’ was a very popular thing happening in her area.  This is where they have taken out the side wall of their kitchen or dining area and extended it into the alleyway to give them more living space.  Often these alleyways are unused and running down the side of the house so changing them to indoor space can add a lot of volume (and potentially light via skylights) to a room.  It is clear that many home-owners are currently ‘improving, rather than moving’!

I was helping her choose tiles for the new space and she wanted to go for a seamless, natural flowing floor that went all the way from her hallway through to the kitchen/ living space.  To meet her requirements, we recommended and reviewed some of our large format ranges.  She hasn’t made her final choice yet but has taken some tile samples to try at home including our Universe 90x45 Grey which is also anti-slip.

Once she had left I had a little look online to see what other people had done...  here is one with a before/during and after picture:

This one caught my eye and what a difference!  It makes me want to do this in my house! What I think really makes this side-return extension fabulous is the bio-fold doors paired with a clean light tiled floor, how lovely that would be in the summer - I’m very jealous!

Here’s another example of a side return. By keeping the walls and the flooring light, gives the room a light airy feel.  And if you like the flooring we do one very similar to this called ‘Saone’ available in 3 colourways.

What I like about this next project is the concrete worktop, giving this kitchen an ‘urban look’ and the fact the chairs don’t match at the kitchen table...

When looking at their flooring they have gone floor a wood flooring inside and outside.  We do a range of ‘wood effect’ floor tiles called Re-style.  And have a ‘grip version’ that is suitable to be used outside for the flowing look.

Happy tiling everybody!
